Tamil

There are a lot of things that I am thinking about and considering before I go to India this January.  One of the things that has been on my mind a lot is the language that is spoken in region I will be living.  It’s Tamil.  I’ve heard it sung in songs, spoken in movies, and seen it written.  I have no idea how I’m going to learn anything.  I’ve been scouring the internet to find helpful courses that teach how to say words and phrases.  I just want to learn a few: ” My name is…”, “I am an artist,”  “I am a teacher,”  “What is your name,”  who would have thought that this would have been so challenging?

I see a lot of webpages and sites that show you how to learn the alphabet and recognize the Tamil letters, but nothing that works really well with pronouncing words.  I usually come across poorly recorded voices, or worse….. computerized voices (google translate).  This is actually a widely spoken language.  It’s not only found in India, but Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore— to name a few.  It’s a little frustrating.

It is estimated that there are 120 million speakers of Tamil!  That’s more than the speakers of German!  So where are the lessons, the videos, the sounds bites?    Besides that, it’s a classical language and has been around for thousands of years.

I did find this one series:

.

I hope this helps me out a little bit.  I don’t expect to be able to have conversations, but I truly believe if you try to learn something about someone’s culture, language, art, and cuisine you are more likely to develop deeper connections with others and learn more from one another.

  1. I’m a native tamil here in TamilNadu. Tamil that is written is quite different from the Spoken Tamil. Even the tutorials will teach you tamil, if you find, that is more of a written Tamil. Someone familiar with Tamil can relate these two. But, someone anew can’t relate the words between those two at the begining, thought it is not completely diverse.

Need not be concerned about it, people here will be morethan happy to teach you Tamil, when asked. Infact we love our language.

    Welcoming you in advance.
